My most carried knife is my Guardians' 2018 Lambsfoot, which I have named RALF (Real A$$ LambsFoot). I have assigned him a relative weight of 100% and weighed a few other knives for comparison. I thought it might be interesting and possibly spark some conversation. I have included knives with wood, bone, stag, horn, old synthetic and acrylic covers. Also, knives with 1, 2, 3, and multi-blades. Please join in!

One gram equals 15.4324 grains. I have a gram/ounce kitchen scale, a gram lab balance, and a powder measure scale (grains). I also have a bathroom scale which has been most unkind. I shall soon be selecting something for show'n'tell.

Wait a minute - how come I got mocked mercilessly for asking people to take measurements and do division, but you get a pass?

By the way - I work in land surveying (in the office except for the occasional site visit), so doing math with measurements is pretty much what pays the bills at the Tom household…

Tom, FWIW, I think about your thread almost every week.🤓
Last week, one of my carries was a Victorinox Florist knife, and when I noticed how short the sheepsfoot blade was, relative to the handle, I thought, "Gotta add this to my data base." (My "data base" is the envelope from a bank statement that I received near the time you posted your thread on which I recorded the measurements I collected. It lies on the kitchen table next to the place where I sit for meals, reading, working on my laptop, etc. So I see it every day.)

Regarding Jeff's thread, I find it interesting as well, but doubt that I'll participate since I don't have a scale with enough precision to measure differences in pocket knife weights. :(

What surprised me about the measurements was how little difference it took to feel the difference. At home I wear loose fitting sweat shorts and a T-shirt, and always carry an alox Cadet in my LFP and a single blade something in my right front pocket, usually a straight-edge. My RALF at 66 grams is noticeably heavier than my forum Viper at 61 grams. And my stainless #73 drop point is noticeably heavier than my RALF at only 7 grams heavier. Now in jeans I carry knives of well over 100 grams and never notice the weight. The light, flimsy shorts accentuate the differences.

Yes, I'll pick a heavier or lighter knife to carry depending on the clothes I'm wearing and how likely I am to need something large. When at home, I have knives in almost every room of the house, so don't need to carry something large and heavy, but when I go out I like to be prepared with a larger knife.

I''l have to get the digi scales out soon... I like a big knife, admire the dimensions but can't stand weight :D Outdoor heavy coats allow me to carry a bigger knife but if it's just in the trouser pocket then a horseshoe is unwelcome.

Weight is key as I refuse to use a sheath for a pocket-knife, where's the sense??

Have to brood over recent carries and make a list but leave the maths part to elders and betters 😵‍💫

Put a new battery in and here's my list:

SINGLE

Lloyd Stag - straight edge 52g
Fox Livri Micarta- Leaf 40g
G.David Laguiole Barehead Juniper - Clip 61 g
Au Sabot Tonneau Delrin - Sheepfoot 74 g
Lloyd Stag English Jack - Sheepfoot 75 g
Viper Forum Knife Ram's Horn Wharncliffe 65 g

MULTI

CASE 39 Stockman Bone 56 g
CASE 18 Stockman Bone 66 g
Buck Forum Knife - Elk 67 g
Winchester BB Stockman Bone 71 g
GEC 68 White Owl Ebony 54 g
GEC 38 Farmer's Jack - Bone 68 g

These are the ones that have had regular carry over say 3 months although the GECs much less and this kind of surprised me, they're losing favour... Singles are 2 French, 2 Italian, 2 American weight range 40 - 75 g average 57.5 g Multis are all American although Böker Germany can get in on the Stockman carry but it's the Large one.
weight range 54 - 71 g average 62.5 g. Looks like weight can be crucial!

The downtrend in GEC carry did surprise me, I used to use the 73 a lot but it seems out of favour lately, Stockman types rule the roost, no Whittlers and the GECs will invariably be 2 blade single spring (38, 33,68,) same end Jacks seldom go out with me these days. As for singles, I'd like to carry a Spear more often but it seldom happens. CASE don't offer much, GEC are nice but often EO which I find impedes carry, they're rare on Euro knives as singles although the SAK Pruner is liked as it's Spear/Pruner on a thin frame.
