Reliable belt sander?

Hey again. I'm looking for recommendations for a benchtop sander for rough-shaping grips and other woodwork, preferably one with a 4" belt. I just had to return a Shop Series that started breaking down after only a few weeks, so I'm hoping to replace it with one that's more reliable or at least can be repaired.

You haven't filled out your profile, so we don't know where you live to give a better answer.

Jet and Craftsman 4" belt sanders are usually good, and can be found used for a low price. If you find an older Craftsman or other type with a belt drive, you can change the motor to 3 phase and add a VFD and make the sander variable speed.

Of course, the more expensive Rikon and similar units from Woodcraft and other woodworking sites are great.

Powertec and Rockler appear to be the same unit, and should work as a mid-range price unit

Is this the Rikon model you mean? The price isn't too bad, more expensive than the Shop Series but not a ton more.

Edit: Actually it looks like the same thing, just with different colors. Very similar-looking models also seem to be marketed under the Bauer, Genesis, Powertec, Rockwell, Ryobi and Wen labels. Whether they're actually made by different manufacturers, I have no idea.

Yes, that is the type I am referring to. It is best to just post the model number of the item and let people look it up themselves.

Rikon - 4'' x 36'' Sander

4 In. x 36 In. belt / 6 In. disc sander #50-112

I have sanded out probably over a thousand handle blocks on one like it. I have rough shaped some long blades on it too.
For sanding wood you definitely want to hook up the vacuum port to the shop vac.
