It all depends on pricepoint and how much you want to shoot it.
I had a friend who purchased an Auto-Ordanance 1911 which was very reliable with ball and accurate. Accurate that was until about 10K rounds. Considering most pistols are not shot much, durability may not be an issue. This pistol just had too many soft parts in it and he shot it completely out and junked it.
Base model guns from other manufacturers cost more but, will also tend to last on the long haul include Colt (still a little pricey), Springfields (in their 'Loaded' configurations) and, Kimber.
The sweet spot in entry level pricepoints versus quality appear to be the Kimbers at the current time IMHO.
If you can afford more, Les Baer and Rock River both make 'stock' pistols that are in another class altogether.
