I think it would be cool if Spyderco offered a tough OTF for a good price. I think if anyone COULD make an OTF capable of edc uses harder than regular(if that makes sense) for a reasonable price, Spyderco could pull it off wonderfully. Sal, if you're looking through the forums, I would buy one(or 5) of these if Spyderco made them. I know Benchmade, Microtech and others make them but they're overpriced or simply not tough enough

I doubt they could make one cheaply. OTFs aren't easy to manufacture in any case, then you need to think about all the new equipment they'd need.

If anyone can pull it off, it's Spyderco. Unless you know of somewhere else that can do it that I don't know about?

I'd love to see Spyderco make a quality double edged, double action OTF automatic, preferably with a coffin shaped handle and button on side (like the Piranha Excalibur) and a 3.5" to 4" blade. OTOH, I would not expect it to be cheap. I'd be ecstatic if it came in at a "street price" close to that of the Excalibur and Benchmade's Infidel, rather than up in the DKW Sandshark range.

OTF knives do not interest me very much so I do not know about them. So my question is will the market support the kind of volumn in sales that Spyderco would need to justify making the investment to product OTF knives? There seem to be companies like Microtech that specialize in OTF knives and I am not sure what the upside would be for Spyderco.

I am not certain about their durability for other than light use, but they are real fun to play with. :D

I sadly wouldn't be able to have one

Stupid Michigan knife laws

Nonetheless I'd enjoy to see it happen

We've thought about it and we have a few rough designs, but I don't think that we could make them cheaply. Benchmade's and Mictotech's are well made and really aren't overpriced for the effort they take to make. A heavy duty one would certainly be in question though. It would have to be pretty heavy to handle hard use/ abuse. Nothing I'd want to argue with customers about when they break it.

I have a few OTFs (Microtech and BM Infidel) they are fun knives for sure but to me lack any sort of practical purpose when it comes to EDC. I always think of Spyderco as the workhorse knives. That said, if Spyderco made one I'm sure it would find a way into my collection. :D

I really think you should give it a go. Microtech has questionable warranty service and Benchmades have the button in the wrong position IMHO. I think you guys could have a strong showing if you did make one (preferably in orange :D)

Given the extra Federal hoops Spyderco has to jump through compared to other makers, probably not. Still, it's fun to dream.

I'd have to agree about MT's warranty, but I feel exactly the opposite regarding button placement although that might be a result of my preference for OTFs with double edged dagger shaped blades. When combined with a double edged blade, having the button on the side, like Benchmades and Piranhas makes the knife totally ambidextrous. You can carry and use it either right or left handed without needing to move the clip.

This sounds like a good idea. I like the Delica that I got myself a while ago. And Sal, if you want, I can put any prototypes you get made to the test. I think as far as making it reliable, lower price and safe, the best bet would probably be single action with only one sharp edge. That way, there's less moving parts in there
