Anybody unfamiliar with Nara click the link above and meet him.

I've had a few requests from people asking if it might be possible for Nara to make a khukuri for them -- this because Nara makes them the old fashioned way. I did not go to visit Nara in February for a couple of reasons, no time, and I didn't have a way to make the trek up to his house. I'd need a horse. So much for that.

If we can get five people who would like a knife made by Nara we will try to send somebody up to his place and see if he will do it. Choose from the HI offerings and Nara will duplicate as best he can the khukuri of your choice. BirGorkha will make the scabbard -- Nara will never do an acceptable job on the scabbards.

Price will be the same as the HI price for same khukuri. Nara's khukuri will be made of MB spring (we will supply the spring) but it will not be finished like HI. If you want the full length tang, say so, or you will get the local partial tang. We will guarantee Nara's khukuri but will not guarantee you will be happy with the finish.

Questions, comments?

One word of warning. We have not heard from Nara for some time and men do not live as long in Nepal as they do here -- about 30 years less on the average so there is a chance Nara may have moved on. So, please keep that possibility in mind and don't let hopes get out of control.

Uncle Bill,
I'd love to have a khukuri by Nara. Put me down for an 18" WWII with a full tang & wooden handle. Tell him to make the blade only as thick as he thinks it needs to be, not according to Sher/Bura/BirGorkha sharpened prybar standards. Don't worry about a scabbard - I'll ask Terry Sisco to make a sash-style scabbard - but include a 7" BirGorkha chakma & karda if Nara can't be persuaded to make them that big. That's my idea of a neat set.
If you can get enough takers to make the Nara project work, let me know the price of my set and I'll cheerfully prepay in full

Hi Uncle Bill,

I would like to own a knife by Nara. Whatever he likes making. Whatever seems to be the best for him. As traditional as possible.

It seems that there are more handle drop for the older Khukuri.

P.S. I've mail you my personal copy of the CD because I can't find any more in my district. Have you receive it yet?

Uncle Bill, I go along with Berk except make mine a 16 inch WWII, full tang, wood handle.

Can't wait!! Hope he's still with us!!

Blessings!

Vince

I'd like one *exactly* as Berkely described.

I'm adding this thought a bit later: the only request I have beyond Berkley (sorry for the earlier mispelling) is that I would like the handle to be a little bit longer than traditional Nepali size. So as to fit the American hand a bit better. Just a request, not absolute -- I wear size medium gloves, but I found the longer handles of my recent UBE and KK quite nice.

One more and we will send somebody up to see if Nara' still alive and kicking. If he is not we will find another master kami from the village who makes khukuris without the use of any modern equipment or electricity. But, we will get biodata on him and present it before we start a new project. I, too, hope that Nara is still with us.

BTTT, in hopes of recruiting one more convert to the cause.
For those who might not remember, or are hesitant about buying a pig in a poke, this is the way the Ganga Ram special came into being - just have faith in the abilites of an old master, and cast your bread upon the water

Uncle Bill, maybe Nara can make the first khukri Khutmore ? It would be an honer for an old timer like Nara to make the first .

Pakcik Bill.

YES! I'd love to have a khukuri by Nara - something different - is it possible to put me down for:
  • Model: Teen Chirra.
  • OAL: 17 - 18".
  • Handle length: -+ 5".
  • Blade thickness: 3/8".
  • Single blood groove.
  • Full tang.
  • Handle: Wood (without any engraving).
  • Traditional scabbard.
All this while I have been waiting for a chance of having a Teen Chirra Khukuri ... I hope this is the correct time! Anybody wants to joint my boat?

You can log me in for one, Uncle Bill. I'd like something with a full tang, along the lines of the HI 18th Century (without the engraved hash marks on the sides) or the HI forward-curving khuk. Heck, the one that Nara is holding up in the photos would be fine.

Pakcik Bill.

I got a strong feeling (or is it only my hope?) that Nara is still well alive down there at his Himalayan Hillside home! Maybe his daughter has grown up to a young beautiful lady! The sound of his laughter & curse can still be overheard from the nearby in between of the clinging sound of hammer hitting hot steel! Ahh .... how nice?

Pakcik Bill.

Just like I mentioned in my prev posting ... I would like to have a special Khukuri made by Nara ... a Tin Chira! ... BUT ... if you think he won't take my order (which I think a bit burden for him) due to his old age ... I would still love to have whatever Nara Special! ... SO ... in that case, would you please just log my name for 1 unit of either a Tin Chira or a Nara Special!

NEPAL HO!

Gelbu is going to take a couple of days and go see if Nara is alive and well enough to make a dozen or so khukuris. Nara is located about 40 kilometers from BirGorkha which is not so far as the crow flies but there is no road up to his house so some trekking in involved. It will be a two day journey.

We'll supply Nara with material -- steel, horn and wood -- for the khukuris, kardas and chakmas. The sarkis of BirGorkha will make the scabbards. Don't expect a mirror finish or any of the amenities you see on BirGorkha stuff. This is just how Nara would make the khukuris for his neighbor -- it'll be a true village khukuri made by a village kami albeit a pretty good one.
