Just wanted to share this idea with you....though some of you might be doing it, I forget.

Was looking for some DIY tree straps today for a new hammock I got, and wanted to save on made to order tree straps and whoppie slings. I found something, but the obvious didn't dawn on me till someone pointed it out.\

I went to Harbor Frieght Tools and for $8 got 2 adjustable tie down straps. 1" wide, 12' long, about 1200lbs rated. Swing one end arounf the tree, and through the loop of the other end. Attach hammock. Use adjusters the same way you'd use whoopie slings. Presto!

It was such a great idea I thought....no funny knots and marlin spikes and other complicated nonsense. Since there seemed to be a big hammock following here, I shared.

BTW...My Walmart is selling packable nylon hammocks for $24. Been testing mine on the test platform in the garage (two big eyebolts drilled into the wall) and for the money, it's great. NOT "Outdoor Products" brand. Didn't recognize it, but it's pretty solid. Pick one up for the gathering.

Thanks for sharing CT, I've toyed with the idea of tie down straps. How are they for keeping some hoss from slipping down a pole while boarding the hammock? Say, maybe while setting up camp in a shelter house while drunk?

hammocks are great. i own a LOT of them.

i should see about getting one of the mosquito netting things like the eno nest dealio. perhaps one or two.

the mayan style family sized hammock can hold 2000-2500 lbs? wow.

I have the ENO Bug Guardian. Highly Recommend it!

First off....I'm an idiot. By that I mean, I'm not experienced enough to judge distance. This entire time the trees in my backyard were plenty close for a hammock.

Second, I did the first real test on the tie down straps. Not only did they work flawlessy, the setup time is faster than a whoopie sling, with less parts (straps, hammock, 2 biners). I am thinking of pulling the whoopie slings out of my ENO and putting the original rope back, becuase I like this so much better. Argh!

Setup time: approx 90 seconds, not racing.

I've got a buddy who uses that system. He loves it. Usually gets set up a bit faster than I do with it. I just use some static climbing rope... works fine for me.
