You can still find them in some old homes. They're cheap at yard sales, flea markets, etc..

And, they make great ceramic rods for a song.

Is there a grading on ceramic? Similar to aluminum or titanium maybe. I have some very cheap ceramic rods and some nicer ones, the cheaper ones feel cheap.

I’ve stuffed a length of 5/16 drill rod through one to make a handy touch up tool.

I have one in my car with a whittled down Honeysuckle branch stuffed into it for a handle. I got a coffee can full of them at a yard sale for a buck. They work well for me.

Haha this was neat. I said I bet there's still some of them down the basement and sure enough there was a whole run of em left. They came right out with a dowel and a rubber mallet.

Unfortunately they are shorter but will still work well.

Cool idea thanks.

If there are rough spots on them, I clean them up with old stones (which also cleans up the old stones).

I use this thing all of the time, It works great! Thanks for the idea. Turned a handle from a chunk of locust. Just messing around with some home made gravers and it looks ok but makes it much nicer to use.

Even today I used a newer s30v buck 112 to skin a bunch of scrap wire and it left the edge a bit of a mess. The old porcelain tube cleaned it right up.
