I gave accolades to the folder side of the company, but also negatively critiqued the fixed blade side of sog. I used the daggert series as an example. When I first saw them they were made in Japan msrp just around $100, then a year later made in Taiwan msrp went up to almost $120, about a year and a half later I recieved one made in china and msrp went up to $140. I found it hard to believe the msrp shouyld go up while the quality went down.

Well I was then called out by an employee of SOG who proceeded to tell me these specific knives were ALWAYS made in Taiwan!!

Well If you remember me here is 1 of as many as I can find

That's hilarious..I'm staring at my Sogwinder and Daggert right now made in Seki Japan, last SOG's I will ever buy. Good to know SOG employees don't even know their own product.

Chillax, That is certainly humourous. :D Don't know why SOG maintains/raises the prices of its knives although they are now made in Taiwan and no longer Japan. Maybe it's a bold statement that they are the "same quality" as the Seki made ones.

Regarding SOG employees not having knowledge of their own products, I can only attribute that to the training aka orientation program that SOG gives when their employees join the company. At least they should know maybe half of the catalog or everyone should have 1 catalog on their desk to read daily. :p

Darkleaf, +1 on that. The Seki Japan SOGs are the last SOGs I'll buy. Leave me out from the Taiwan or China made stuff. Yes indeed it seems that SOG employees don't know what they sell. :foot:

I've always loved SOG knives since I was in my early teens, the models they've produced over the years were always so cool looking but totally functional.I used my SEAL 2000 as a throwing knife alot, still have the same SEAL and it is still a frequent companion on wilderness treks(one tough S.O.B.!)So then when I hear that someone broke a Gov-Tac by simply dropping it on a hard srface it completely turns me off of SOG.Give us a testing video like Cold Steel does for their Taiwan made knives.Til then I'll stay away(Sadly)and stick to brands that listen to what the customers want.

I found it hard to believe the msrp shouyld go up while the quality went down.

Was the quality actually worse or are your just generalizing based on country of origin.

Not that I am defending Sog or anything...just wondering...

I'm a little confused. Is one of those knives in the picture supposed to be from China? If so, it would help if that could be seen in the picture. Maybe I missed it, but if that was the point of the picture, I don't see any "China" on any knives.

So this is a shot in the dark, but maybe the Daggerts were always made in Taiwan. I'm just thinking that since on some websites the country of origin for the Daggerts is listed as "Taiwan, a province of China," it can easily be confused as to where these knives are made. This is just a thought.

dl351: No, the knives in the picture are the '2005 Special Edition' Daggerts that were made in Seki Japan, just like the Gov-Tacs SEs. You can see the engraving on the knives. The knife with the 'Seki Japan' engraving is the "Desert Dagger" - you can tell this by the different guards.

Taiwan is not China. :p It is a country by itself (ignore the political stuff).

The Daggerts started out being made in Japan, owing to its ancestor, the 'Desert Dagger'. The Special Edition Daggerts were made in Japan. However, the current production ones are now made in Taiwan.

What Chillax meant was that the SOG employee he talked to wasn't sure of where the Special Edition Daggerts in his picture were made. The employee probably then flipped through the catalog and made a hasty (now proving unwise) :o conclusion that since the catalog listed the current Daggerts being 'Made in Taiwan' ALL the Daggerts must have been made there! :grumpy:

As far as I know, NO Daggert knives have been made in China unless you are talking about the 'Fusion' series or the fakes I've seen on Chinese websites.

Cheers,
Mark

Actually, Taiwan isn't quite all of China.
And the Nationalist of Taiwan would probably regard the red held mainland a province.
Otherwise Taiwan is known as the Republic of China (RoC).
Mainland China is the Peoples Republic of China (PRC).
In this case, 1 China with two rivaling systems.
The trouble is when some smart capitalist Taiwanese start going to thier cousins for outsourcing.

I see what you guys are saying about Taiwan and it only makes sense. I thought Chillax was trying to say that he has seen Daggerts that were actually labeled "China" and a SOG rep said they were never made in China, though.

Okay we are comparing apples and oranges here. The one marked Seki- Japan is the Desert Dagger and the other two are the Daggert 1 and Daggert 2 Special Editions.

The Desert Dagger has been discontinued since sometime around 2004. The Desert Dagger was made in Japan as marked on the blade on the photo.

In 2005 we introduced the Dagger series of knives (the other knives in the above photo). The Daggert series has always been made in Taiwan, these were never made in Japan.

If you look at the knives in the top photo there are two different cross guards plus other differences. They are completely different knives, different names, different part numbers and different country of origin. So to say the Daggerts were made in Japan at one point and then moved to Taiwan is a stretch. Yes both knives are double edged dagger type knives but they are completely different designs from the ground up.

I am not trying to call any one here a liar, I am just trying to straighten out some misrepresentations. I can see how it would be confusing to people that are not involved in this everyday.

Good call chris the pic does show a dagger and a daggert, my bad score one for you.
But darkleaf posted he was staring at a Seki Daggert! this goes to show I'm not the only one. I'm not a looney trying to start a fight.

The basis of my original posts was to point out that sog has and is still jumping back and forth between countries of origin and loosing cutomers along the way. The Daggerts where personnal examples that I have seen go between countries while going up in prices. If this was a bad example, then what about the seal pup jumping around, or the mini pentagon.
I'm lookin at my shipment taht just came in and the Seal is Taiwan Too

My point is my customers do recognize these changes and here alone in this thread you have two customers feeling the same way. I respected SOG as a quality product, but now? Don't pull a "Lynn"

I'd rather have a Japan-made knife than a Taiwan-made knife.

Over the past few years, though, I've noticed a great increase in the quality of Taiwan-made knives.
Particular examples are knives from Blade-Tech, Boker Plus, CRKT, A.G. Russell, and Cold Steel.
I no longer have any issues with owning/carrying a Taiwan-made knife.

However, I still stay away from mainland-China made knives, which I've found - in general - to be low quality.

I think what we're all trying to get at here is the inconsistency in production and rising prices, firstly whether marked Japan, China or Taiwan SOG still does not mark the quality of steel used in their fixed blades. I have countless of those little insert catalogs that ive some how collected over the years sitting in the store i work in showing the seal pup being made from aus6, 440a and aus8 and ive seen it jump from Japan to Taiwan and now back to Japan. Now when i attended the SHOT show in Vegas I asked, "so if you're going to taiwan.... why are the prices going up and why the change?" I was told SOG was getting better results from Taiwan than Japan.(which personally i find hard to believe) Oh and while we're at it why don't we solve the issue with the new mini pentagon by adding a T to the end of the name and saying it has no relation to the older models. so there we have it Mini Pentagont!
