We have to download it as we are out in the middle of nowhere and barely have internet over our phones.

Craig Camerer, a contestant in the season 2 premiere is in our knife club. I really like this show.

The wife and I both enjoy the show and WILL be watching for you Salem - You gonna shine!

I do have a question here - they commented the one blade didn't look up to temperature due to the low level of red color when he quenched. With the bright studio lights just how well would the color show up on quenching? Also, the file is over 62Rc, so would cut a 59 Rc which seems like that would be plenty hard? Comments?

The failed blade was made using the axle, while the other blades were made from pry bar stock - just how high carbon is a pry bar? I didn't think it would have sufficient carbon for good hardening? I was looking for an old car spring in the batch.

I thought the axle shaft was the best choice of steel that I saw. I think that as long as you make a blade to the specs provided then they should allow all of the contestants to test them.

I didnt agree with skidding him mainly on the file test. As stated a file could still bite even if he got the steel reasonably hard. Did they file test all of the blades? I too figured the axle steel would be a decent choice. The part i though was stupid was the 20 minutes to inspect and choose your steel. The lady chose the load binder handle. and it didnt work. So instead of having to use the steel chosen, she just went and grabbed a piece of craigs billet. Not only had he already partly drawn it out, but it seems that allowing her to change steels totally contradicted the 20 minutes to choose the steel you HAVE to use rule.

If they tested one knife with a file, they should have tested all of them with a file. With all the bright lights, it would be hard to tell the color when quenching.

So who other than Craig and Salem do we know in this round?

I really dislike the first round elimination. Let the makers finish their knives, then let the test sort it out. This season seems to be getting better than last. Perhaps eyes have been reading the old threads and made some changes based on feedback? Not sure, but that's my $.02

DO you guys know Zack Jonas? He's an ABS JS who makes some very nice stuff, a full time maker who was a student of JD Smith's at Mass Art and has workshops with Ford Hallam at his shop.

Also, Chris Marks was on my episode- also an awesome maker, got his ABS MS in 1992 for pete's sake, a pioneering damascus smith who currently makes some amazing folder!

Yep, Craig Trnka. A good guy, and funny as hell, too.

He is something! He sure knows how to move steel. Being a farrier, I have been to a couple of clinics he has put on and I have watched a few of the WCB contest. I have several friends that compete in them. Almost did my self. I think I would get my butt handed to me! I wanted to watch when I knew you were going to be on, now I can miss it. I'll be pulling for ya Salem.

Have met Chris on a number of occasions, know of Zack. Chris is one of the first guys that I heard of using kerosene, diesel fuel, etc as "flux" for forge welding.

I'm glad that we're getting another season of FIF, despite the instances that will inevitably come up during the episodes and bug me lol. With that said, there is still one thing that I can't stand, which is the same as last year... When they introduce the bladesmiths and "say" their names, they only put their first name up on the screen. ... I'm always curious to search up the smiths and check out their work online either during commercials or after the show, but most of the time I can't tell if I heard their last name correctly, and if I did, well, you all know how there aren't any rules when it comes to the spelling of names, especically when it comes to last names lol.

For example, when they introduced the female smith, "Kim", all I could hear for her last name was, "Stall"?? Of course I used my google foo and searched numerous ways and spellings and came up with nothing. It's just such a stupid-simple fix that I have no idea why they still don't include their last names on the screen. And I even have it On Demand so I can rewind and relisten to the names, but I still couldn't quite make some of them out. Anyway, *end of rant* :D lol

I also was wondering if they file checked all the knives. To "my eyes" the color of his blade looked great, like a nice bright red, and that was under all the harsh intense lighting

With all that aside, I can't wait to watch you win, Salem! ;) lol The short preview they showed for the next episode looked pretty cool, especially the blade for the final two home forge build. It looked like a khopesh, which I'd really love to see forged.

As some others have said, I'll probably be tellin my dad, "I've chatted with that guy a number of times on bladeforums and was given advice by him etc.!" ;)

It's pretty cool being able to watch people that you "know" and chat with either on the forums or FB compete on a top rated network TV show, especially when it's a show on something you're very passionate about!
