I forget from time to time. I carried my halo to work (fire dept). I rarely do this, it's not a dresser queen, it's really just not practical. Anyway.... I had it out fidgeting with it. The captain wants to see it. Smart man, knows more than any 4 people I've met combine. Well what does he do? He opens it into a plastic cup (thick plastic, not disposable) to see if it will shoot through. wtf. who thinks that is a good idea? even if you don't realize that knife costs several hundred dollars, any idiot can tell it's not cheap.

cliff notes: even smart people do dumb things.

I'm sure many here feel your pain.

I've come to the conclusion that people who aren't very sophisticated when it come to knives, don't get to see mine. I've got too many that are "neat" in their opinion, and people (even smart smart) just can't resist flipping them open, playing with them in close proximity to others, cutting something ridiculous - like a soda can, or they do something like "I used it, so I sharpened it for you on the kitchen steel". I appreciate the sentiment, but...aaarrrgh.

These same people wouldn't dream of letting you behind the wheel of their Mercedes or BMW; but they have no problem turning a $250. knife into a garden weeder for you. :grumpy:

thx - cpr

Did the Halo survive unscathed? That sucks - sorry about that happening.

absolutely. In all honesty, it shouldn't hurt it at all. It's the principle of it. It's like loaning someone your car and they pull out sideways doing a burn out. Didn't ruin your car mostly likely, but it sure as crap didn't do it any good.

Understood . . .

Even in Canada, where OTFs are the biggest of no-nos, I sympathise. It happens all the time where people get some crazy idea to see if a device or product can do something it obviously can't, or shouldn't, and for some reason they seem to forget the monetary and sentimental repurcussions.

Four years ago, I got my first serious knife (by which I mean MSRP>$80), a Camillus Heat - and this was the real thing, not one of those beaters they make in Spain right now.
Anyhow, I let a couple of freinds in my building see it; the knife-naive can't tell a Spring-assist from an auto, so they just thought 'Switchblade! Cool!' and in spite of this, someone thought it would be a good idea to throw it into the floor to see if it would stick.
Well, it did. And the tip was horribly mushroomed. This was back before I knew how to sharpen and restore tips, so the knife was blunted and deformed until it was stolen some months later.

We do nothing wrong by indulging the curiosity of others. It's when they're inconsiderate of how much of a limb you're going out on, that you run into trouble. I used to carry a secondary knife that I didn't care about, for just this purpose, but I stopped wanting to think of myself as a guy who feels compelled to carry two knives. Now I just tell people not to be abusive before I let them see my life. I mean, knife. :$

Wince!! I only show my knives to a select few. I heard more knives are damaged by being dropped.

yeah I carry a leatherman too. ususally what I lend out.

Job hazard, I show knives to everyone!

But for people wanting to borrow a knife to cut something, if they aren't knife knuts, it's the shop beater knife. First one I forged, ugly and tough and thus far no one has seriously damaged it.

Took me a while to clean it properly after one dweeb used it to cut all the tar paper for a roof. (Though it was cool that it held up for the job) But that's the worst sin visited upon it.

I guess you could call that a double edged sword. oh that was bad.

I almost always carry two knives for that exact purpose. One's a beater, or at least not totally expensive (Tenacious typically, or one of those swiss army things), and another that I really like (CF Military, T-Mag, D'Allara recently). People always ask to "borrow" a knife, and I'll hand them the beater. Nobody plays with my knives. ;)

Better, I just don't let people know I carry a knife so I never have to worry about the "uneducated".

People get the idea I'm probably more than just a little bit protective about my knives when the first thing they see after I unlock the collection cabinet is the white cotton gloves I make them put on if they want to handle anything.

Exact same thing here. Always carry two with my beater ranging from a Case slipjoint, Boker Wharcom, or a SAK.
