Hey yall, im thinking about getting a 11-87 super mag as a workhorse/first semi shotgun as an all-around good shotgun. However, i have heard some bad things about it. This is the newer updated version that will shoot 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2 shells. Can anyone tell me why to or why not to get one and how to make sure that it stays reliable? It seems like a good shotgun for the money.

Thanks you,

Full disclosure: I don't care for autoloading shotguns. I've owned some nice ones, but they were never my favorites.

The 11-87 Super Mag is an OK gun. I tell people that it's the cheapest autoloader on the market for a reason, but that statement does do a bit of disservice to the gun. I love versatility in a shotgun and this one has loads of it. The biggest issue I've seen is people forgetting to install / remove the gas seal ("barrel seal activator") when swapping between light 2 2/4" and heavy 3 to 3 1/3" loads. Also, the gun seems to get picky about light loads when it gets dirty.

Like any gun, knife, car, or computer out there, if a person got a good one, they are convinced that brand and model are the best ever. I have a friend who owned the one good Yugo made.....

I hope you get a good one.

Thanks for the reply. I am not yet ready to drop serious cash on benellis or Berettas just yet. So just keep it clean and shoot heavier loads?
For me 900 in total does not seem that cheap for a shotgun haha. Fit and finish seemed ok on it. Do you think I should get a used super Vinci? Lastly, how long would it take to know if you got a good one? I'm just new to the shotgun world.

Thanks,

Save up the extra money for a better gun. I have a Benelli SBE II that I have put thousands of rounds through and killed thousands of birds with and has never ever let me down once. Even a used SBE II is a good bet.

Have you considered a Winchester SX3? They can be had in 3 or 3.5" variants. My 3" was $800. Totally reliable so far on everything I've put through it mostly 1 and 1 1/8 oz target loads in sporting clays.

What do you think about the super Vinci?

I have not shot one of those but people seem to like them. It wouldn't be a consideration for me because it's way out of my price range and I have no real need for 3.5" loads. If you haven't yet check out shotgunworld. It's a forum for shotguns and you should be able to find out what you need about different models.
