This past April at the last remaining knife show in Maryland, Carl and I were walking about the show and I passed a display of old Remingtons. They had seen better days, but what I saw got my heart going. Remington boys knives, actual honest to goodness Remingtons. Not Camillus but Remington!
The price wasn't too bad, more than I was willing to spend at the show that day though, kicking myself now. I still wanted to stop at a knife shop down the road, and do a little horse trading, and held back on the boys knife. So, I passed on them. I hope to see that display next year, the chances are slim to none, but hey, one can dream.
I've owned a few Camillus made Remingtons over the years, but I don't recall seeing any of the boys knives patterns recreated by them. I've seen some of the older boys knives, these Remington boys knives were top flight specimens of vintage knives. Their wear and tear did not hide that the makers took exceptional pride in their craft. I don't think any Friday afternoon knives came out of Remingtons factory.
Does anyone recall if Camillus made any barlow or boys knife patterns unde the Remington logo? I saw boys knives with spear blades, with long pulls and standard nail nicks. I don't remember if I saw any clip point blades. Looked like they were all wood covers. A little wear and tear here and there. Nothing bad, and thinking back on it the prices were not astronomical. But, if I can get a cheaper Camillus reissue, I'll go for that first.
Right now, I only own two original Remington knives, and two Remington Camillus patterns. I have an older serpentine jack style Remington with soem nice jigging, the main blade has been sharpened down, the barlow had a little nubbin' of a pen blade, Bob Picklesimer removed the pen blade and gave the barlow new covers. The Camillus Remingtons I own are a scout knife and a bush pilot.
Bear and Son may have made a boys knife under the Remington imprint, but after reading the reviews on their knives I'll pass on anything from them.
Pictures are requested of any Remington, Camillus Remington and Bear Remington boys knives and barlows.
