Just got a smkw cat and saw the remington powder horn trappers. Cool looking knives. The antique orange bone is particularly nice looking. Anyone buy one of these already? How is it? FYI, they have a special on the web site for $19 instead of the listed $29 in the cat. What is the name of the thumb nail openers on those blades?

I believe these are made in the same factory as the Rough Riders. I've had several of the import Remingtons and the RR's, and they're very similar. They're pretty decent knives as users. I don't know if they'll ever be collectable.

Those patterns are along the same lines as the RR 'Rifle' series that SMKW released a while back. On impulse, I bought a six-blade Stockman, and it was actually really nice.

On some older pattern (American?) knives, those 'nail nicks' are called match strikers, I think. I could be wrong. On the newer knives I think the way they're made wouldn't work for striking a match.

thx - cpr

True plus most matches sold today are the "safety matches" variety rather than the friction/strike anywhere type and so while those nail nicks are cool looking, they probably are not as useful as they used to be.

Thanks for the info on the nail nicks/match strikers. I'll never use them for that but they sure do look good.

Well, I finally got one. I got the trappers determination. I'm pretty happy with the deal. The thing arrived in a box big enough for two pair of shoes. The poster was well protected and will look great in the garage. The knife comes in a blister pack with a tin can case. The knife is nice looking and I really like the powder horn emblem and the look of the grip material. The nail nicks are just what I'm looking for. The main blade has a cool remington stamp. Neither blade is sharp (to me!) however. Good deal for $29 shipped. I'm looking for my next one now...maybe the trappers courage.

If anyone wants the collector tin case let me know and we can get it to you.

Aha! Thanks for the pix, you've unwittingly solved a query for me. I was given an Imperial Large Stockman by a dealer,it's from 1971 has a kind of ivory delrin scales with this odd shield on it with Frontier and this thing looking like shellfish! Now I see it's a powder-horn, er....

That Trapper will make a great user. And that shield is reminiscent of the old Frontiers brand.

willgoy: I have two of those, in black & ivory delrin. It took me several weeks to figure out that the shield is a powder horn with a strap in front of it. Originally I thought it was some sort of goofy skinny powder horn type.

IIRC, when U. S. Schrade bought Frontier, they dropped the Frontier slipjoint line because they didn't want competition with their own Old Timer patterns. That was a shame - those old Frontier Stockmans feel as nice as my Schrade 8OT.
