as a newcomer to collecting knives, who made what and which are repros. of originals, is a confusing matter. well today i took an ebay chance and for $31 won a 3 7/8 in Remington R8 stockman with reddish brown jigged delrin handles and a serrated sheepsfoot blade. the clip blade has a long nail pull and etch "REMINGTON TRADE MARK". the shield is circular with REMINGTON over UMC across middle of the circle. tang of clip again has circle with REMINGTON over UMC in it and around edge of circle is MADE IN on spine side and U.S.A. on tang side of circle. other side of tang is R-8.
i would like to know if this is an older or very recent Remington and who it was made by. i know Camillus made the "Bullet" series, but i think that refers to knives with a shield in the shape of a cartridge ? any help with this knife as well as info to help sort out Remingtons will be much appreciated. roland

That one is also a Camillus made one, Camillus not only made the Bullet Reproductions, but MANY other knives under the Remington name.

A real Remington would have to be made before 1940, and would never have a serrated sheepsfoot blade or Delrin scales.

That tangstamp matches my 1990 Remington Tracker Bullet knife made by Camillus.

If you are interested in Remington knives to collect, I highly recommend "Remington Knives Past & Present" by Ron Stewart and Roy Ritchie.

EDIT: I think I found your knife in the completed items on Ebay, it is definitely a Camillus.

thanks TLC, i am relieved to hear it is a Camillus and not a cheapo repro of a repro. i have not seen another like the one i bought, with the circular shield and in derin, so maybe not many were made ? SMKW website shows some really recent "Remingtons" and they look Chinese. for a beginner who hasn't been around for the last 10 to 20 years, it's tricky to sort out which of the Remington reincarnations are the better ones. roland

The new Remington slipjoint pocket knives you are seeing at SMKW are as you suspected, made in China. I bought one of the stockmen at a local feed & seed store for 9 bucks, 440A and black delrin, nothing to brag about, but it actually is an OK knife. Not as good as the Camillus ones, especially those made before the Madison move. When you see Remingtons taht the tangstamp says "Madison" on it, those are Camillus also, but are often lesser quality than the earlier ones
