Just received this Remington Whittler knife bought on fleabay. I know that there are some Remington knives that are highly sought after and very highly regarded. Obviously this is an inexpensive model, but I am impressed with the quality given the price paid. It has some kind of synthetic covers, made to look like stag or bone. The blades all have excellent walk and talk, with solid springs. There is one slight gap between the brass liner and the shield side back spring. It is not a normal whittler pattern in its configuration, in that the coping blade pivots at the same end as the main, large clip point blade. The two secondary blades share the same back spring, while the main blade has its own spring (unlike the configuration I normally think of as a whittler, where the two secondary blades are at one end each with their own spring, and the main blade is at the opposite end by itself, using both springs).

The tang stamp features the word 'Remington' inside of a circle, with MADE IN on one side of it, and USA on the other, while the reverse side has R14 stamped on it. I'm most interested to know what the blade steel is, and maybe to get some idea of how old this knife is. The box and paper work that came with it make me think it is not a current model. Anyway, I'm very pleased with this knife, and would appreciate any information anyone can give!

From the looks of the tang and shield, most likely an early to mid 1990's Remington with Delrin handles. Some of them had 440 stainless steel.

Definitely a 90's Remington! Excellent knife, made by Camillus, with 440 series blades, and a great "user." Carry and use this one, you'll like it! I'm still carrying and using the R4466 I bought in 1988.

Regards,
Ron

What Ron said. Made by Camillus
If the blades are stainless, then 440A is the alloy.
If the blades are carbon steel, then either 1095 or 0170-6C (a non-stainless alloy steel with a bit better performance than 1095 )
