Was packing the main pack and thinking where to put the firstaid kit ans PSK when it hit me. Put this stuff in the removale top waste pack. If needed the smaller pack can be seperated from the main pack and all of the emergency stuff is ready to go. If your not going hiking or camping the small pack can hold all you need. Just add water.

It's really a good idea to put the PSK on your person, in your pockets, as much as you can. That way if you lose the pack, you have the stuff in your pockets to survive.

I also know there are times when what you are talking about becomes the reality and that's why I have been experimenting with Maxpedition gear extensively for a while now. I will be writing about that in the future as well.

I have the Jumbo Versipack that I have been using as my PSK. I really like it and I keep thinking I should photograph it and the contents I've included till now and post the pics here. I keep thinking that there is other stuff I want to add and that it isn't finished yet. Of course, it may never be finished so I should just take some pics and post them. :D I really like the Jumbo Versipack . I have some other Maxpedition stuff and like thier gear. Its expensive but probably worth it in the long run. I think the JumVersi is going to work out really well.

Ding, ding, ding! Maxpedition Jumbo VersiPack with contents. My EDC when i am not staying at work for my lunch hour:

My contents:
Leatherman Wave
AMK Pocket Survival Kit
First Aid kit in waterproof pouch
Mora knife with tinder, mag block/flint steel, and knife sharpener (Dog Bone)
Poncho
32 oz Nalgene
GSI SS Bottle cup on the bottle sleeve
SAS Survival Guide (Collins Gem version)
Extra tinder canister (not in picture)

All these items are stored in the rear pocket, front pocket, lid pocket, and side pocket. With all items stowed, the entire main compartment is still wide open to accomodate lunch, extra supplies, etc. Its a good pack for toting around, but I did use it on a long weekend camping trip in place of a day pack, and I found it didn't meet my needs so weel for that application.

Loug does have a good point about stowing important gear in the detatchable top lid of a pack. that usually where I put items that I want to get to in a hurry, and I know that if need be, I can detatch the lid quickly and scurry away from danger faster than if I was wearing the entire pack.

And regarding keeping things on your person, yes, that is an excellent point. I try to do that with smaller, more basic items. I don't always wear BDUs or similar garb, so pocket space can sometime be at a premium, and thus dictates what I carry on my person. I tend to not weigh my belt down with gear, asn far as wearing blades, multi-tools, etc. But, that's just me.
