Removable fixed blade scales.
How can scales be made to be removable?

Has anyone done this? What did you do? What screws/bolts did you use and where did you get them?
I like the idea of being able to disassemble a knife to clean it completely.
I also like the idea of being able to change handle materials...G10,micarta,hardwood ect.
Any hints,tips?

Thanks,

I've never done it, but it's easy enough. Just bolt em on with cap or allen screws.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

I just came from a couple of makers that have done it...Hattin and Perkins.

Forgive me guys if I misspelled your names..It's 2:00 am.
I hope they reply here and let me know what they used and how they did it ....Perkins used stainless screws and bolts...Hattin used hex head bolts I think.

Shappa, I use the screws sometimes on the fixed blade knives I make if practical. I use a 1/8" or 3/16" hinge pin with the stainless steel screws. My procedure
may not work to well on the blades that have the handles heat treated.
What I do is drill a 3/32" hole to do all the fitting and finishing of the handles. A 3/32" pin is used to keep everything in line. Then I drill a 3/16" hole in the handle and step drill the handles on the inside to accept the 3/16" pin that has been tapped all the way through for a 2-56 screw. It takes a little adjusting and fitting but it works good. The hinge pins are the same ones that are used in liner locks and some of the other folders. I have a couple of them on my web site if you want to look at them. They don't work very well on the very thin handles.

A readily available production fixed blade, the Benchmade Nimravus (140 and 145) has removable scales, if you want to take a close look.

Rob, how are those inserts secured? Are they two piece or one? And are they purchased or fabricated?

Osbourne, you could do as you say, or you could also solder them in as well. I like them like in the picture because it is much stronger than tapping the handle, due to the rasied shoulder mating to the handle.
