Remove black coating

Hi,

i have a 2005 EKi Combat Karambit that i am toying with removing the black coating, two(2) options that i am considering are this:

1) paint stripper or sand the whole blade and lose the logo and serial numbers etc

or

2) just strip the bevel and leave the logo etc intact

Who's done this and taking into account i do not have the access to bead blasting it will have to be hand done.

Thanks, tim

I don't think there is a stripper that will remove the coating. Go the sandpaper route.

My CQC-14 began life BT, I removed the coating from all the metal except the thumb disk.

The black coating will come off pretty easy once you try to remove it. A nasty chemical stripper may well take it off with a bit of help (and leave the logo). You can also sand it or just buff it off, both with good results.

I tend to just buff the coating off and then give it a hand rubbed satin but that does indeed remove the logo too. I prefer my knives to be sterile so that's actually a + for me.

I love that sterile no logo look, and I use sandpaper as well
start with the rough sandpaper then get the smooth sandpaper to finish it off
might even be able to get a mirror finish after a while

You mean you could save the Emerson logo even removing the black coat, can you please elaborate on how to achieve this? Thanks.

the logos are laser etched (or similar), and cut in to the blade itself. if you are able to remove the coating, the etch will remain, albiet less visibly w/o the black contrast.

if you sand, it is very likely you will remove enough metal under the coating to go below the level of the etch.

i have a lagriffe which had a black crinkle coating similar to that on busse knives. it came off easily with a chemical stripper, and the logo remains.

the coating on the folders is different, dlc i think. i don't know if a chemical stripper will have any effect.

While removing the blade coating is cool, it will void your lifetime warranty. Maybe you could just try to trade for a satin finished blade?
