I have a fixed blade that the blade is chromed.....it has rust on it and looks pretty rought right now....would love to clean it up, but will still look rough even without the rust because it has been chromed, is there a good way to remove the chrome as well without damaging the steel too much?

Thank you.

you might want to contact bill deshivs, he could answer your question since he does plating work. if i'm not mistaken its possible to reverse the plating process but i'm not sure how well it will work or what the final results will be. the only other option is to have the chrome sanded off on a belt sander down to clean metal and then finish the metal however you want it to look.

Soak the blade in hydrochloric acid. Do this outside.
If the blade has been undercoated with nickel, it will then be exposed. You can sand the nickel off, or I can strip it for you.
If there is no nickel plating, the steel will be exposed.

Wow, interesting. About how long would you need to leave it in there?

Just curious, J.

Until the chrome is gone. You can test with gun cold blue. It won't color the chrome plating. Check it every 10 minutes. Rinse it with a solution of ammonia or baking soda and water to neutralize the acid.
