Remove "Flag Coloring"

I really want to get a CUDA EDC, and naturally I'd like to get it as cheap as possible. My problem is that the cheapest type of EDC that I can find has a "flag colored" handle. Now I'm not anti-American or anything, but I would like to have a knife that's a little classier than a kind of guady American Flag knife. So, on to my real question...Is there an easy way to remove this coating and coloring without damaging the steel of either the handle or the blade. I know that I could probably sand it off, but that could end up looking pretty ugly. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it if you could let me know what they are...

The flag EDC has a 420HC stainless steel blade. The newest regular version has one made of 154CM. You might just want to pay the extra $10 and get the new one.

Oh really, I didn't realize the flag one didn't have the updated steel. Mabye it is worth that extra $10. :)

I'll second that.

The slight price difference is not worth having a knife made out of lesser materials that will require a lot of work to look the way you want it to.

If you do decide to get the flag version I would think that any machine shop with a sand blasting cabinet could make short work of the coating. Of course that would probably cost more than the price difference between the two knives.

If you choose to hand sand it off there is no reason that it can't look good. The important thing is to remember to gradually decrease the aggressiveness of your sanding media until you get the sort of finish that you want. If you go low enough you could probably even put a nice mirror finish on the handle. That would certainly look unique, but would take a bit of work.
