After 2 hours of work, me an inexperienced coating remover, FINALLY got it of. I had no idea what i was doing, i tried using nail polish remover, didn't work, scraping with knives and every other semi sharp thing in my house. at last it came off. But for next time whats a good way to do the job?

i have heard that you can get paint stripper from a hardware store that will take it off pretty easily...i would say try searching the busse forum. i remember a couple of tutorials on it in there.

Pix, Man!
I used WD-40 and Green Scrubbies. 15 minutes on my Emerson. I'll try the Stripper, if there is a next time.

I used some hardware store stripper on my Ontario RAT-3 and it did the trick nicely. Apply, wait 15 minutes, wipe it off, neutralize with mineral spirits and polish it up to your desired level of shine.

Same here. I used Ace Hardware paint stripper on my Becker BK7 (back before Camillus closed.) Worked really well. Ongoing project right now is polishing/cleaning up the blade, giving it a nice hand worked & polished finish.

I removed the coating because it looked ugly after a bit of use. It had flaked off in spots on the butt end as well. I take care of my knives and tools so rust isn't a concern, even with it being D2.

Some will claim that the coating makes for more resistance in cutting, but to me it wasn't such a big deal. I doubt I'd realize it anyway.

What is the benefit of removing the coating?

My personal preference is that I don't care for the thick coatings on some blades. I understand the purpose of it, but if a blade is maintained properly, I don't see the need for it.

After seeing what another forum member did with his Becker I started the same kind of project with mine.

ha, ya'll just saved me a TON of work. i've been grinding it off, with curses for lubrication.. and by now the inventor of blade coatings must be roasting merrily in the infernal pits if MY opinion matters.

2 Rat 3's, a Rat 7, a RTAK, a kershaw outcast, and i won't have to GRIND it off? if i wasn't a confirmed heterosexual i'd kiss all of ya.

no fear, i'm too old to shift gears.. but the sentiment remains.

Where are some @#$*&** pix??!!
That's been my thought, too, reading these posts. I can't wait for someone to post a picture of a nice, high polished, Rat 7, or something similiar.

PS My Hissatsu came with a high polished finish, no coating. When did they start putting a coating on them?
