I owned this for about an hour and already was makin' changes. First to go was the jimping on the flipper. Way too sharp for me. Dug into my fingers when I choked up.

Then I decided that I really prefer the non-Flipper, but love this slicer. Having never seen a non-Flipper slicer, I decided to take matters into my own hand.

Used a thin Sharpie to mark the blade in the open position as to where I'd like the final grinding to end and then took it apart and got to work. Used my home made 72" grinder and, in 17 degree temperature and a bucket of water, I ground for the count of "One One-thousand" and then dunked it in the water.

When I got close, I changed the belt to a smoother one, then over to the 1" grinder and smoother yet and then down to the worn out emery I use to sharpen knives.

After that, an initial buffing with a cutting bar and then my blending bar. I could not be happier with the result.

Re-assembled after a good cleaning and then used WhiteLightning knife lube during the re-assembly.

Hope you all like the pictures. I certainly could not love this knife any more now!!!! It feels great in every hand position and I can cut all day with no "hot spots".

Very cool. I have yet to have even held a Hinderer but they are growing on me the more I look at pics.

I was the same way. Until I held one and felt just how superior they are, I could not understand all the excitement. Now I am a true believer.

Simple: the way these babies FIRE open with it, it is as close to an auto knife that I'm ever likely to get!!

I thought that it was common sense =)
But seriously, I love the flipper over the non! But that's just my two cents.

Full disclosure, I'm pro flipper. Miss it on most all my non-flipper knives.
That is YOUR XM and if it works for you, good on ya. I'm guessing any future XMs you seek will be non-flipper from the get go?? Your work on it looks nice despite my internal struggle to be pleased with taking a grinder to such a beautifully designed tool.

Your work looks great. My first thought was, "Oh no, he's voided his warranty", but then I thought what the heck goes bad on these anyway? Nothing it seems.

Wow...

FYI....plenty if non flipper slicers out there.

Good to know. But, I just had a connection with this knife already and felt that this was a very simple way to really make it mine...all mine. :)

You know, I read the warranty terms on the site and knew full well that this would lead to a voiding of the warranty, even though it did not structurally alter the knife, just removed something that could have been removed at the shop. But, I have to be honest. In all my years of playing with knives, I've never had to take advantage of a warranty. And, with as over built these are, figured that this would be the last knife I'd have to ever worry about.

Warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship. Rare to have any issues in these catagonies on such high quality tools. I woulda tried to trade, sell or at least send an e-mail to the shop before I fired up the grinder. But that's me. Your work looks good to the naked eye. I'm sure you took care because you speak highly of the XM. I understand what and why you did the flipper removal, it's just not what I would have done. It works for you and that is all that matters.

Hey, Ya done did a nice job. You like it. It looks Great, seems like a win/win. As for Warranties.... great IF you need them but chances of that being the case are slim and none I'd say.
Enjoy!

same here. the hinderer knives warrenty is completely useless. they need to start making products that break.

when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object, you get the XM-18.
