Not a big fan black coated blades, so popped the blades out of these
two folders and spent a couple hours on each one with 800 & 2000 paper.
They are probably acid etched before coating and some black remains.
Both now have a polished grey gun-metal look. Came out ok.

Both are excellent work knives.
Unfortunately both knives are only available in black coated models:

Nice job.Maybe a good buffing would make them bright if that is what you want.

Thanks, actually the black in the pores of the D2 will probably
help it resist corrosion a little. I keep them well lubed with mineral oil.
They have a nice smooth satin-grey finish like a well used knife now.

Looks kind of like a "vintage" or patina'd finish. I like it.

Will agree. I did the same to a knife that had a silver/grey coating and got the same result as above. Came out pretty cool. A pain though if you want it completely gone though.

I might be tempted to take the blades out and try paint stripper + steel wool rather than go to all the trouble of hand sanding them.

hehe, glad you tried it out 440hard :)

I like the patina on your knives.
here's my 940 from 320-2000 grit wet dry, no logos left :D from all black to all bare S30V and aluminum.

That's some serious bling on that Osborne :)
Can only imagine how many hours you have in that.

Yup. That's the way I do it. Spray on some paint stripper, wait a few minutes for paint to bubble and scrub with steel wool. A lot less time and elbow grease.

I trashed the (soft!) black coating on my Ka-Bar Dozier Bobcat. Love the knife - hate the weak coating. Since I was taking it apart anyway to clean it, I decided to strip the blade, liners, and clip. Pictures coming up as soon as I can get them polished up.

How did you do it on the Kabar ? With chemicals (stripper of some type ?) , or sanding, etc
I'd like to get an Orange Dozier with the original blade,to my knowledge these are only out in the black :barf:
TIA

I got some heavy duty stripper in an aerosol can. Sprayed it and let it sit - then took a Scotchbrite pad to it. Worked pretty well - kinda regretted starting it on the clip, though - hard to get into that thing and get all the black off.

Here are my photos of my Bobcat. First - the soft black coating after a few hours of use:

And after stripping the blade, lock bar, liners, and clip (wish I hadn't tried the clip - what a pain in the rear - there is still some black on it if you look closely). Some of the marks are fingerprints. Some (in fairness) may have come from inadequate polishing - I refused to spend more than two evenings on this:
