i just bought a stihl woodcutter forestry axe and started chopping but the head is a little loose. i was gonna remove the head and seal it up with gorilla epoxy but not sure how to remove the axe head. it is a wood handle with a wood wedge and round metal wedge. can anybody recommend how to remove it?

here's a video sorry for the shitty camera

1.) Saw off the handle as short as you can.
2.) If the head is loose already, just use a punch to hammer it out.
If the head won't move, try drilling out the wood in the head until you can knock the rest out, like in step 2.

3.) take your time and don't get carried away & damage the axe head. (Speaking from experience in this one.)

If you plan to re-use the handle, and it sounds like it's very possible in this case, drill out the center wooden wedge very carefully avoiding damage to the haft as much as possible. Then you should be able to pull the round metal wedge, though you'll likely need pliers/chisel/etc to pull it out.

Then you should be able to use a punch to remove the handle by knocking it out from the top. Once it's off, clean the kerf cut of all remaining wood from the old wedge. Then, all you have to do is follow the An Ax to Grind tutorial of hanging a head.

-Re-seat the head, flip the head and handle upside down, and pound the swell with a wooden mallet until the head seats fully
-Add a new wooden wedge until the wedge is very tight and hopefully almost bottomed out in the kerf
-Cut the excess wedge off and leave a little of the haft and wedge sticking out above the eye bu just a little (the wood will be "peened" over locking the head in place even more

i tried to hammer it off (probably not the best idea) it came 1/4 of the way off so i just put epoxy in the gaps. if this doesn't work i will try what you said

i just got it off!!! took me a couple hours with a drill and some robo grips. the epoxy hadn't dried yet, only problem is i kinda screwed up the handle with the drill but i hope it still works
