Hey guys, I'm curious if anyone has any experience in removing the 'Harley Davidson' lettering on the handle of the Benchmade/HD 13940? Is there a method to remove the words on the handle without damaging the finish? I'm not concerned about the skulls on the blade and clip, just the main 'Harley Davison' on the handle. Any input is appreciated!

I think the writing is laser engraved into the anodizing. I've not seen one in person so I'm just assuming, you know what they say about that.

If so than the only way to remove it would be to bead blast the handle scale or have it chemically stripped and get it re-anodized.

EDIT. Never mind, I found a pretty detailed pic and it looks like paint. Not sure how you could get rid of that. Maybe try some paint stripper. You could remove the pocket slip and test a small drop of the stripper under the clip to make sure it doesn't mess up the anodizing.

There was a thread a while ago by someone selling a "sterile" mini hardtail. He had gotten rid of the Harley on the blade, plus all the skulls. I kick myself for not getting it.

I would search for terms like "sterile" and "mini hardtail", going back at least six months, then contact him, if you think that might help.

I hate to drum up an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone had attempted removing the lettering from a bm 13940? I love the 940, but I'm not thrilled with the green handles and I can't stand the purple spine. The 13940 looks good except fore that lettering.
Thanks!

I think I would try acetone as well. I agree with your comments about the 940 - I have thought about getting a 943 instead, but I like the blade shape of the 940 better. If it is just paint, acetone should take it off without messing up the black anodized finish. You might be surprised - googone might take it off as well. Just let it soak for a little while.

Just a quick update...I got the 13940. Great knife.

As for removing the Harley Davidson writing on the grip...2 words for ya...laser etched.

Its definitely etched into the anodizing, so nothing will touch it. I'm going to sell it and get a 940 I guess. Just got to figure out what to do about that purple spacer.
