Can anyone tell me a good way to remove the black blade coating from a Cold Steel SRK?

Also try paint-stripper, but I don't mean as a substitute for sand paper in various grits.
Good luck.

I used Zip-A-Strip paint remover first.
Scraped that off with a putty knife.
Polished with sandpaper.

If you start with sandpaper the epoxy coating gums it up quickly and you'll go through alot of it.

One other thing. Don't expect to see 'shiney' under there.
Its a big job and will take a while.
But the results are worh it :D

If you know anyone with a fine bead sandblaster, tape up the very sharpened edge and the handle and blast it.

Did this with a aluminum handgun frame once, looked nice, non-reflective matte finish.

Just never have liked the black coating, but I also make the assumption that maybe it doesn't slice or cut as well with maybe more drag. This is only an assumption so please correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know if paint remover would work on the Beckers...never tried it.

Black blades really aren't my thing as far as looks goes, but they work. My SRK has taken a beating over the years and the finish is worn, but it still protects the steel.(ditto for the Beckers) I would leave them as they are.

The coating shouldn't affect cutting ability. I understand what you mean about drag along the main grind. If it were me, I would just take extra fine steel wool and smooth the blade. The coating as Terrill said helps protect from rust. Just a thought.

i used a dremal with a flap type will and took it off nice in about 10 mins

Howdy,
If you have a gas stove in your kitchen just put the blade on the burner for 30sec to 1min, and then you can just scrape it off with the dull end of a butter knife. Anything that doesn't come off just put that spot on the flame and it should come off. Do one side than the other.

Hope this helps.

I'm assuming that the paint removers would work on the Becker coatings also?
Paint remover works on Beckers just fine. Turns it into a black goo that you can scrape off with a razor blade. A little work with sandpaper will take off the greyish stain that remains. Be prepared for a rough finish under the black though, it takes a bit more work to get that better but the results can be very impressive.

Maybe I'm just a little impatient but I just sprayed my Recon Tanto with a heavy duty paint remover and it isn't affecting the coating at all. I'm going to wait about 1/2 and hour and try again and then I guess that I'll go another route. I guess if the coating is that tough it's stupid to try and remove it....but I just don't like the black.

Yep, if all else fails just follow the directions. After 10 minutes coating is coming off with no problems.
