Removing black from clips.

I'm not a big fan of black clips, particularly on black handles. I know why some people like them (because they're covert) but for me I really like the contrast of the silver clip on the black handle. Anywho I remove the black coating on most of my Spyderco clips.

I soak them a bit in acetone and then scub them with 0000 steel whool dipped in the acetone. I then buff them to a satin finish with a dremel. I tried this on the clip for my G-10 Leek and the acetone had zero effect on the coating. I also noticed that while the Spyder clips are black and a tad glossy the Kershaw clip is more of a gun-metal dark dark grey and very matte.

So what in hell are these things coated with and how do you get it off? I'm going to try and order a naked cllp and screws from Kershaw but I'd still like to know for the future. It's easier to just remove the coating than to order a new clip.

The black clips are not coated, it is Black Oxide. You can either bead blast it off or sand it off.

Like Tim said, you can sand it off. I've done it in the past on a couple of Emerson clips and old-style black oxide Benchmade clips with a simple emory board, some metal polish, and a little elbow grease. ;)

I have stripped 2 kershaw clips. Start with a really ruff sand paper, and work your way to 1000 or 1500 grit. The clip will be mirror smooth with the kershaw logo still black, looks really good.
