Guys,
I need to remove the black coating from a CRKT M1 Lightfoot clip, and liners. I'm leaving the black on the blade.
I was wondering if it might be easiest to drop the clip down in Ferric Chloride for just a little while? Would this work without damage to the detent ball? Will this even remove the black?
My other option is to use a Scotchbrite belt on the Bader, but it won't reach all those "hard to reach" areas.
Any tips? I will check to see if I can find out exactly what kind of coating is used. As of now, I'm not sure...
Thanks fellas.

I've really no clue, but my guess is not. Coatings generally are there to resist things like mild acid. ;) Can you disassemble the knife to Scotchbrite or beadblast the required parts? I think that'd be my first try.

You might want to make sure you mask off areas you don't want to change, such as the edge of the liner that makes the lock against the blade, and the area of the blade washers...

Yeah, I just thought it might work like a charm.
I'll just buy a scotchbrite belt and use that. I've always wanted one of those...

Now would be a good time to own a bead blaster, especially with that ceramic bead stuff :)

Yeah, I got the blaster. Only have rough grit alum oxide. I could blast it off too, but I'm going for a polished look on the hardware, and thought the FC might take it off, and I'd be a little closer to polished, as opposed to a blasted finish.
I still need the ceramic though! Zirblast is so sweet...

I'm not at all sure what kind of coating they use on the Glock field knife, but I was able to remove it easily with phosphoric acid (rust remover with less than 10% concentration). Something similar might be worth looking into.
