Removing Blades From A Multitool?

Has anyone ever tried to remove the knife blades form a multitool? If so, would appreciate knowing the results - which tool did you try it with and did it work successfully? That is, did you end up with a collection of odd pieces or a useful, working tool after the "operation"? Reason I am asking is I'd like to have a multitool that I could carry to places that might "frown" on the knife blade. Or is this a dumb idea?

I've considered doing the same thing for the same reason. Also, I've never used the blades on my multi-tools.

The only reason I haven't gone through with it is because I don't think I'd do too good of a job and I'd probably mess up a nice tool.

I am interested to see if anyone has successfully accomplished this.

Hi Maury,

Most of our SOG models utilize hexbolt construction and are able to be disassembled and customized. Email me if you want more info.

I'll jump on that SOG recommendation. First of all, the Switchplier is the very highest on the "gadget index" you can get. And with SOG multitools in general you can interchange tools. Which means you can pretty much get an extra whatever you want and remove what you want.

The gadget freak in me is happy I've come across this thread.

So you can get extra tools from SOG and install them on as you see fit?

I own a Leatherman Wave and I'm very unhappy about what Leatherman has done. They used a 5 point anti-tamper Torx screw and all the bits I've found were all 6-point. I needed to dismantle because of rust (it had a minor altercation with a Samson fish that weighed in at 70kg), so that I could clean it.

There are still rust spots in there, not to mention the blood and guts and minor fish parts that I have not been able to flush clean. As soon as I can, I'm going to make a 5-point anti-tamper torx bit. Then I'm gonna take.......it........apart. (*insert evil gleam in eye*)

Also check out www.gerberblades.com and go to their build your own section. You can design your own multi lock 600 choosing everything from the color, type of pliars, and which tools it has. There are configurations available with no blades.

Good post. Steelwolf, let me know if you find a solution to your wave problem. It is close to mine. Thanks

Why not just snap the blade off? Put it in a vice and bend until it breaks, or take a hacksaw to it? Then just fold it back up. IT would be hard to open the blade stub you have left, so it would just sit inside the handle.

Since we're experimenting and snapping off blades in vices, maybe this would work (maybe not):

- grind a slot across the head through the mutant torx and then simply use a standard slot screwdriver and take 'er apart

Once you're done, you can screw in back together, using a washer or whatever to take up the space the blade width occupied. Then, you have a blade to replace at need.

This may not work though, just speculatin'

I have many times thought of getting a multi-tool without a blade.

But, lately my thought has changed.

What if I have to go into an area or zone where knives are verboten, but often a multi-tool, despite the presence of a blade, is acceptable.....
