Removing Buck black oxide

I recently purchased a short Nighthawk, which I really like so far, however I am not fond of the black oxide finish. Has anyone had luck removing the Buck black oxide coatings? Is there a sure fire way to remove it other than sanding & buffing?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have not tried anything yet. I am going to give your suggestion a try tomorrow. Thanks.

I think black oxide has to be sanded off. If you do it, start with a fine grit or you'll have scratches to deal with (ask me how I know :( )

Scotch brite pads may work. If they don't remove it I would still suggest them for giving the blade a nice "satin" finish when you do get the coating off of the blade.

I was surprised how good a finish I was able to get on a blade with them. Especially since I have the skills of gerbil when it comes to handy work!

Unlike paint, the black oxide coating is a bit harder to completely remove.
Unlike a blued finish, the black oxide is not just some mere chemical stain.
A proper sand blasting (with approprite masking) would be the only effective way.
