I got a recon 1 tanto the other day and don't like the coating. If it was the dlc like my ZT 350 had, that would be a differen story but given the price difference it's understandable.

I don't want to use harsh chemicals or paint thinners and was wondering there was something around the house I could use? I've heard some people use wire brushes, or wire wheels, sandpaper or razor blades.

What would you recommend?

You need to use chemicals.. sorry. If you try to use something else it will take forever and probably not turn out looking good. I use Klean-Strip gel. Put it on, let it sit overnight. Scrape with a razor blade, rise and done. Leaves you with a stonewash finish. If you are worried about getting on your hands, wear black rubber gloves.

If it's an older AUS8A Model, It is a coating. If it is CTS XHP (A newer model) It is a DLC.

Older model, Easy enough. I stripped my AUS8A Lawman using steel wool and elbow grease after disassembling the knife. I don't think that will work on DLC.

I used a wire wheel on mine. Works awesome and is very quick. Mine had the Teflon finish. You will need to lightly oil the lock mechanism though. It gets sticky without the Teflon there. Mine was the older aus8 mini ak47.

I used an old pan head screwdriver. Stood next to a bench grinder and repeatedly raised a burr, used the bur to scrape off the coating like one might use a card burnisher. It worked great, cleanly pulled the coating off but didn't harm the finish underneath.
