Removing discoloration on leather sheath

After a 15 year search, I finally accepted delivery on a Merle Seguine Hunter in mint condition.

The knife was stored in the sheath long enough to cause 3 very dark stains on the leather.

The sheath is a medium Burgandy color, with white stitching, so I am unwilling to just dye it.

Anyone know a SAFE way to remove the stains?

Thanks,
Dave

That's a tough one. I guess I would try saddle soap first, but I don't have a lot of confidence in it for stains. Then ... dry cleaning fluids, I suppose, commercial spot removers ... are you sure you wouldn't like it dyed a little darker?

I think you can probably remove most of the stain, but getting all of it and making it look new might not be possible without making the whole thing at least a little darker.

Try some lexol leather cleaner and conditioner, its not supposed to darken the leather. If you try couger's idea on spot remover, be careful how strong the stuff you use is. I would worry about bleaching the leather if you get something to strong. As a last resort, depending on where the the stains are in relation to the stitches, you could try and match the dye and restain the spots to the right color. That may not work very well either since the stains are darker than the leather though. Good luck.
