looking for tips on removing handles from chiruwa or m43-style full-tang pinned handles. i have removed 2 of the regular handles, so i am familiar now w/the boiled kuk drill. i am specifically wondering about the pins -- whether they have to be drilled completely out before heating the handle and peeling it away in the usual way.

and about reassembly -- whether you just fit the new pin/reuse the old and peen over.

if anyone has caught them using something other than laha on these, that would also be good to know. both of my standard handles had laha AND 'something-else' filling the handle voids. fortunately, the laha was used all around the tang and so the handle would still come off w/heat.
regards and thanks

Hi Guys
I would also like to know about this. I want to remove the grips on a blem seax to replace them with a more authentic grip. It would be nice to know what I am getting myself into. BTW the grips are horn.
Regards
Phil

I removed the slabs on a blem horn WW2. Since the handle and khuk was savagely damaged by the previous owner I didn't concern myself about damaging the slabs or pins.

The pins were aluminum. I reckon you can replace pins from brass rod. (Even I can do that :) )

The buttplate is removed the same was as others have mentioned. There is some laha between the handle slabs and the tang.

Dunno about the bolster though. Mine came with it almost completely removed.

I wedged, levered and bent the slabs off with a screwdriver or two. I still have em' around somewhere but my camera batteries are dead. :(

Get a chisel, put the knife in a vise and slowly work the handle off (after you've boiled it to heat the laha).

Just did this very thing with a regular knife last night....(yes, the shop is up and running now...:D)

Scales came right off. Was kind of a crappy knife though...:o

Won't be by this weekend....:D

always nice to know what to expect. will post pics -- but it will be a long while ;-) as i have already chumped two handles for the first replacement i have tried.

on a regualr handled khuk, how long does one have to boil to remove the handle? does it just pop right off?

how wide is the tang usually in a regular handled model? it would suck to get the handle off and then realize there isnt enough metal to work with (i have some green canvas micarta laying around that ive been thinking of using)...

is the buttcap attached with laha as well?

You need to file down the peened end of the tang that attaches the buttcap.

There are reports of some buttcaps being attached with modern epoxy on recent khuks.

The tang on a regularly handled khuk, is substantial but not enough to attach slabs to in the fashion of a "full" tang.

You could do a mortised handle though. Do a search on the makers' forum. You should find a link to a tutorial. I recall it's by a maker with last name of Primos, but not certain.
