Removing Handles?

I kinda messed up the handle on my favorite khuk, :grumpy: and I'm planning to switch handles.

How do I remove the handle from the blade? I put the knife in boiling water and waited til the laha (sp?) melted, but there must be some kind of a keeper or something...

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Humm.. That shoudn't be TOO hard to just pull out right? Maybe I didn't "cook" the knife long enough?

About how many minutes should I boil the thing?

Thanks!!

According to everything I've read (haven't tried it myself), the end of the tang is passed through a hole in the buttcap, then sort of flattened (peened) to expand the tang end that sticks out of the hole. This means that the little button in the middle of the cap has to be CAREFULLY filed down until the expanded part is gone. My guess is that you have to do this before you boil it. Reattaching sort of boggles my mind. I guess you have to have a new handle that is just a TEENSY bit shorter than the original, to account for the part that you filed off.

on the one I took off I filed down the tang and then put a screwdriver under the butt cap and it kinda pops off.

got good info here....give it a shot, let us know how it goes.

BTW, when you say 'messed up the handle', what do you mean? Wood or horn?

A heat gun is a good way to melt the laha. Just don't burn the house down or stink up the place with scorched horn. Go slow.
:D

Blah, I don't have a metal file. THe khuk is still functional though. Destroying the handle would render it useless.

I DO wonder what the tang looks like though..

Mac, if you keep posting stuff like that, you may not make it to the maternal screening.

I have read through past posts, even in the archive, and I still can't figure out what the terms you guys use mean.

I don't really know what "peened" means, or which portion of the handle has been peened over what, or what portion of the buttcap to file off, or how or where to re-peen whatever part was peened when I put the new handle on.

The typical sentence I read reads like this, "take the buttcap and file the RQOIRQ where it meets the APAKDM. To re-attach, you'll have to re-RQOIRQ the OELFKFF by the APAKDM. Be careful.
