Removing light scratches

I recently got some very light scratches on my BM 42 while I was sharpening that you can only see in certain angles in the light. Since I don't use it for anything except flipping I kind of want it to be perfect. Anyone know how I could get these out? Before anyone asks I sharpened it because it didn't come very sharp. Thanks.

Nothing you do will ever make it look like factory and if you do try and refinish it you will need to do the whole blade. I would just leave it.

Is there anything anyone could do? Like sending it back to the company and having it professionally worked on?

That would not be covered by the factory and something I doubt they would do.

Still something the factory would not consider. Got a pic? I might be able to help ya.

The factory will sell a new blade to him. ship in the knife, can't remember the cost.

Call BM.

I try to take one on my cell but don't think it will show them. Will post in a few.

There's simply no downside to calling Benchmade Customer Service and asking
if and how they might be able to resolve the situation - especially as you're willing to pay for it.

I heard something like $35 but that's kind of hard to believe. Also, this model is discontinued I don't even know if they have other blades.

Well, you'll never know for sure if you don't call. ;)

Oh I'm definitely calling. I'm going to be really bummed if they can't help. I just got it brand new a week ago. Do you think this local knife sharpening shop in NYC called Westpfal could do it? I mean I will call them too but they could say yes and then mess it up.

Paying for a new blade over even the smallest scratch seems a little silly. If all you want it for is flipping around then what's the big deal, if you wanted to display it I could understand but you sharpened it so you planned to cut with it right?

I'm not trying to be that guy but there has been a few threads as of late where BM owners want a new blade because of a scratch. It makes no sense to me to do such a thing to a non collector item.

I'm ocd about it. I probably won't flip it much. It is more of a collector piece for me. I wanted to sharpen it once to give it a good edge and leave it alone for good. Wasn't planning on cutting with it ever. I just think it's lame to have a nice knife that isn't sharp.

My feeling - based on experience - is that Benchmade will be able to do at least something helpful.
And they might be able to resolve the issue completely.

Then there are plenty of other options to explore if necessary.

Please keep us posted.

Thanks Rifon, I'm going to call BM tomorrow and probably send it in.

Good news, Benchmade is replacing the blade for the low, low price of $25 plus $5 for shipping. Shipping it to them was pretty damn expensive though. I'm sure most people will think I'm crazy for even paying that but it's worth it to me. It is going to take awhile being that they are on the other side of the country but fortunately Benchmade said their turn around time was down to 3-4 days. Assuming I get it back with no problems I will testify to their great customer service. It would cost me almost as much for the Flitz polish and maybe a Scotbrite with shipping. I found the Flitz on Amazon for $18. I decided a new factory blade was a better investment in case the polish didn't work.

It's kind of strange, when I spoke to the repair woman on the phone she suggested I try jewelry polish. I then asked about the blade replacement idea. I thought they would've offered that idea without me asking. I then told her it was a discontinued model and she said it didn't matter. Kind of amazing how they have a fixed price for all their blades. I wonder how they can replace a damascus or other expensive blade for $25. Thanks for the replies guys.

That is good news!

Hmmm. USPS Priority Mail Insured should have cost about $10.00 or so.
But shipping costs have moved upwards quickly over the past few years.

Crazy? Nah. We collectors are all a little crazy.

Very glad to hear that the situation is on its way to being resolved.
It sure sounds like you weighed the alternatives carefully and came to the best decision for your purposes.
