I am planning on taking apart several older knives and need advise on steps to prep before putting torque on the hex heads. questions;

should I put drops of "break free" or "PB Blaster" onto the hex nuts for a day or two before applying torque to the hex heads? any other techniques?

I know that I need to put downward force onto the nut when applying twisting torque. should this be more or less equal force? thoughts comments ideas?

is there a way to tell if locktite was used when installed? what are pros/cons to applying a small amount of locktite (not permanent) when putting knife back together again?

thank you in advance

How would I go about using heat on hex bolts? I am thinking perhaps a soldering iron touching only the hex head for 10-12 seconds? any other methods recommended for heating?

Use a soldering iron.

Knifemakers typically use blue or red thread locker. Blue is resistant up to 180 degrees Celsius (365 Fahrenheit), red up to 150 Celsius (302 Fahrenheit). Blue is also resistant to oil.

Here is a chart of thread lockers from Loctite, but all brands are pretty much the same. Blue is second from the left, red is far right.

Before you go any further and use heat-just try to remove the screws. They may come out easily after the penetrating oil.
