removing paint from pocket clips

I have a few knives with pocket clips that have a very hard black paint on them. This paint seems really durable, but it's gotten chipped over time. I'd like to remove the coating and either blacken the metal chemically or just leave it shiny, but I haven't been able to get it off. Is there some kind of solvent that will dissolve it without hurting the metal beneath it?

Managed to get the paint off my 3rd Gen Spyderco Endura's pocket clip with just fine grit paper. Sand going one way and it will get it off in a few minutes and leave the clip semi shiny.

I use CitraStrip on mine, it is a citrus based paint remover. It doesn't have any harsh chemicals in it, but if you put it in the clip and leave it over night, you can wash the paint the next morning and you are left with a dull stainless look. I have sanded the paint off also and if you go the through the grits like you are supposed to and take your time it looks good.

I have even used that CitraStrip to take the paint off a Ka-Bar.

+1 on the Citri-Strip,

I have taken the paint off of several clip with just an overnight soak and some scotch-brite.

I have used brake fluid but it takes more like a week long soak. I didnt have paint stripper but did have an open bottle of brake fluid and if you have ever gotten brake fluid on paint you will know after time it breaks down the paint.

If I had to go buy something I would definitely get a stipper though cause it works much faster.

are you sure this is actual paint and not a coating like Ti Ni or Tungsten DLC? these finishes are much harder to remove with a chemical process.

If you sand it (say with even 1500-2000 grit sandpaper), won't the clip rust?

It is acutal paint and not a chemical coating. Although it could possibly be an epoxy paint. I tried soaking in mineral spirits, and that didn't work at all, although I only left it for a couple of hours.

I've used fine grit sandpaper and a buffing wheel with polish on some of my Spyderco clips with good results. They can take a nice mirror polish, but it does make the knife more noticeable in your pocket though.
