Removing Plastic Packaging from Buck Collectors Sets

Hello. I'm a long time lurker and rare poster to the forum. More of a casual everyday user of pocket knives, I do on occasion pick up something I intend to keep unused in original condition.

That said, I have two Buck Boone sets that came in tins sealed in clamshell plastic packaging. Does anyone know if the plastic packaging can cause any long term damage to the the knives from the plastic outgassing over time? Since one contains a 50th anniversary Boone 110, do I need to remove the plastic clamshell to be safe? These are not super collectable knives, just nice keepsakes.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have a couple old first era Buck clear hard plastic clam packagings. They have turned yellow tinted and become brittle. It appears no damage is visible to the knife. Buck 300 models.

I have several metal cans, usually green sided, containing special/LE 300 folders and they were getting scratched by stacking with other cans, sheath snaps, etc. So, I wrapped them in 'cling' type food wrap with no problems for two years or more. And, the paint scratches stopped.

Have not tried it with boxes. Use old socks on fixed blades with sheaths.

Thank you gentlemen! Just the information I was looking for. I did not search for "clamshell packaging", so that one's my goof. I have enjoyed reading this forum for a couple of years, and find it invaluable in so many ways! Everything I nedded to know is pretty much in your linked post, DeSotoSky. Big thanks for that!

I will probably remove the plastic clamshells since I do want to get my hands on the knives, if only for a closer look. I'll probably use gloves to keep skin oils off, and wrap the tins up afterward. BTW - I use old socks for my flashlight collection right now. My few "collectible" knives remain in their original boxes while my EDC blades just go in a tray on my desk until needed. 300Bucks, thank you for that!

It has been a pleasure and I shall keep on reading and learning here!
