What is the best way to remove the coating on a blade? I just got a Benchmade Rant and it has the black coating on the blade. I dont think you can take the handle off so wasnt sure if you could just put stripper on there or not without melting or messing up the rubber grip.

I have used paint stripper on several Busse's and CS's. Depending on the steel, it will still be nearly black in color. I have never had the stripper bother Micarta in any way. But I always test handle material by placing a drop of stripper in some hidden area. The stripper may have to be applied multiple times before getting all the finish off.

Do a search "stripping blades" especially in the busse forum. It's been covered thoroughly there a few times. Should find plenty of info.

hardware store gel stripper-use a cotton ball to apply an even coat, let it sit for 10 minutes (walk away, don't micromanage it) come back and wipe it off with 3m scotchbrite pads. It's pretty much foolproof, unless you get the stuff all over yourself...

Strippers do work well, but here is a piece of advice you'd best heed. If you use one, just don't tell your wife.

If it's a rubber grip, I'd be careful. Stripper doesn't seem to affect micarta. Rubber is likely a different story. I'd just be sure to tape up the grip well, and be careful when applying near the taped grip. Using a Q-tip or even a fine tipped paintbrush might work well.

I used to use these:

With a little elbow grease, they took the thick-ass coating off of my Emerson Raven and left a nice satin finish behind.

best way is to bead blast the finish off with fine grit aluminum oxide or glass bead most towns will have some one with the equipment and shouldn't charge anymore then about 10 bucks check out mistwalkers thread on removing the coating from his a1
