As the thread title suggests, I am not a bird hunter but have my eye on a few of the GEC #48's that come with a bird hook. Partly because these are the only 48's in current supply in stores.

Does anyone know if GEC or a custom knife maker could remove the bird hook and associated back spring, or replace the bird hook with a different blade? What would the cost be?

GEC will not make any modifications at all as they are a factory not a custom shop but there are several members on this forum that could do what your asking. As far as price you'd just need to contact them and discuss that. The first member that comes to mind is Glennbad.

amen to that, Glenn did a mighty fine job with my 15, might enlist his services once more for this double bladed 48

I would check with Glennbad he may be able to help you out and does excellent work. Good luck:thumbup:

Perhaps the bird hook could be easily made into something else, like a punch? Far less modification than removing the spring et al.

I've looked at these as well and haven't pulled the trigger for the same reason. The hook, while interesting, is not practical for my purposes.

HOW do you contact Glenn though, when a PM is not an option? (not a paying member) Email (through the forum) is not an option.

The ironic thing is that bird hope aren't even helpful if you are a bird hunter. I hunt partridge (grouse), quail, and woodcock and have tried the hook and It's like trying to eat speghetti with a spoon. A quick swipe with a finger is much more effective.

I would first look into grinding/hammering the hook into a punch or something.
