What are your recommendations for Removing Rust from Bayonets?

Most of the bayonets I try to purchase are in good shape, but sometimes finding a good one with rust on it happens.

I have heard using oil with something like a 000 Brillo pad works pretty well. I would like to use something that isn't harmful (to me), like a lot of oils can be.

The best way I've found to remove rust:

Stuff you need:
)pack of scotch bright pads (2 is all you need)
)vinger (dosent matter what kind, I usually use distilled white vinger)
)tall container to put the vinger in (it needs to be big enough to hold the blade)
)somthing rusty
)pair of heavy duty rubber gloves (you don't need these but they stop your hand from smelling like vinger for the next day haha)
)oil of choice
)sink

The method:

1. Pour the vinger into your container.

2. Let the blade soak in the vinger for about 30 minutes (maybe a hour if its really rusty)

3. Then go over the hole blade with the scotch bright pad to remove the rust (this might take a little while, if it isn't mostly gone within 10 minutes of scrubbing, I'd let it soak for another 15 minutes and scrub again)

4. Now rinse the hole blade with soap and water and make sure there's no vinger left anywhere on the knife (while vinger is great at geting rid of rust I can also cause it)

5. Now you can choose how to finish the blade, I think the scotch bright leaves a nice finish, but you could also sand to the desired finish.

If its just small rust spots I'd hit it with some metal polish on a rag (mother mag aluminum polish or Renaissance wax would bolth work)

Hope it helps!!

Since you don't want to alter the surface of the bayonet, don't use vinegar or Scotchbrite pads.
NeverDull wadding will remove light surface rust. Heavier rust can be scraped off with a copper penny.
You can also use 0000 steel wool (not Brillo pads) and WD 40. Scrub gently, wipe residue off often.

I use a wire brush to remove rust from the sawblades i make my knives from and it works awesome (and fast)
