Removing Rust from Damascus Blade

i would think you need to avoid anything abrasive, even polishes.

clp, wd40, or other oil woiuld probably be best.

I have very limited experience sharpening and polishing Damascus blades, so forgive me if I am not understanding something here, but doesn't the Damascus patterning run completely through the blade? As in, can't you polish a Damascus blade just like any other and it will look fine? You can't remove the Damascus patterning, as it is made by many alternating layers of steel that run all the way through the knife...

Is this completely wrong? If so, I'm curious what potential problems are encountered when doing this? I am thinking about getting a Damascus chef knife...

Yes and no, the pattern does run all the way through the steel but, it has to be brought out by etching. So if you polish the steel then pattern will start to fade and would have to be re etched to come out again.

I'm not very familiar with etching. Can it be easily duplicated by someone with sharpening skill but tools and skills limited to simple sharpening and polishing?

i believe acid is normally (or always) used in etching, so i would say no.
