Removing rust.

I have a Ka-Bar fixed blade tanto that I bought a long time ago for about $90. I don't know what steel it's made of (back when I bought it I didn't know crap and only bought based on looks), but it's beginning to show a few flakes of rust, and just rubbing it with oil doesn't get rid of them. How should I go about removing the rust?

Try some metal polish

Flitz metal polish should do it.

I could be wrong but I believe stropping compound should also work. I don't know if that could damage the blade or anything in the long run though.
