Hello,
I contacted Benchmade and ask for tang cleaning instructions. They told me that they could tell me about screw sizes (Torx 10 & Torx 6) on fixed knife scales. However, they could not give me detailed or pictorial directions on the process oif removal. Can anyone help me? I would like to clean tang when it gets wet. Any pictorials or detailed instructions, can I screw-up the torxx screws?
thank you very much::jerkit:

If you are talking about the folding Griptillians, disassembly automatically voids the warranty, so they won't tell you how to go about it. If you are talking about the fixed Grip, it should be a simple matter of backing out the screws and popping the scales off. I would suggest heating the screws with a soldering iron first, as they may have Loctite on the threads. If you use a good quality Torx driver of the correct size on hot screws, you shouldn't damage them.

Can you clean and oil tang without removing scales (ie wd-40 spray, etc)? What would you suggesty?
have a great day!

I often use WD-40 as a cleaner and dryer (WD stands for Water Displacing) for my knives, but I do not rely on it as a lubricant. I prefer Rem Oil or some other lubricant with teflon. Break Free CLP also works quite well as a cleaner and lubricant.

You never did say whether you were talking about fixed or folder.

On my stainless steel knives, I really don't worry about the tang. I just wash the whole knife in water (preferably hot and soapy, but a cold creek is better than nothing), shake off the excess and maybe give it a shot of WD-40 or CLP if I have some handy.

Carbon steel knives require a bit more care on the drying and oiling part of the routine, but I basically treat them the same way. It is a good idea to wipe down the blade with oil or Tuff Cloth or other protectant, at least until you get a good patina established.

He said it was fixed blade. However I removed the blade from my MiniGrip just today. Torx 10 for the pivot and Torx 5 for the stud. Don't lose the washers. Reinstall the washers ...carefully and hold it with the pivot stud just poking enough to retain it. Then spit on the next one so it will stick to blade and insert it. It will move, but you can align it through the hole.

I would NOT remove the scales. I bet that omega spring would search for a GREAT hiding place.

:D

Actually, he just said Benchmade gave him Torx sizes for fixed blade screws. Having dealt with Benchmade warranty/customer service a couple of times, that means very little to me.

Yer right. Read it wrong. Just connected "tang" and the info and made an ASSUMPTION.

an ya know wot they say about ASS u ME
