Removing Scrimshaw

Can anybody tell me about removing scrimshaw?
here's the story. A friend is interested in a very nice knife with a scrimshawed ivory handle. I agree with him that it would be better without the scrim. It looks plenty wide enough to just sand it down until the scrim is gone but he asked me if there was a way to get rid of as much of the scrim as possible before sanding it, I've never known anybody that has done this so i told him i'd ask and pass on any information to him
Thanks

Wow, thats a tough one!! Since scrim is just a bunch of dots and scratches filled with ink, I don't see how you could remove it without sanding. Even if you could bleach out the ink, you would still have the scratches. If it was done by a good scrimshander, the scratches shouldn't be that deep so not much handle would be removed. I bet you could even buff em out, like with 600 grit greaseless and then shine it back up with white rouge. Hope you find the cure!!Take care Tom!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Is this a valuable knife???? If so taking off the scrim would be a crime...if it is some production run item...I would say find a knifemaker and ask him to do it...wouldnt take long and it would get done right...probably a fresh 600 grit belt followed by a dull one followed by green chrome on the buffer would do the job...

Here's the interesting part. It's an older dagger by Weiss. It's actually a beautiful knife and he would like to buy it and remove the scrim reason being that the handle is made from an old Knights of Columbus sword
that is ivory and would look beautiful with the scrim off of it. The knife is actually less desirable as it is. And the K of C scrim turns everybody off to the knife.
I have the knife in my posession and am trying to help out another collector by seling it for him. I agree with the guy that's interested in it that the knife sucks as it is but would look beautiful with a clean handle.

Hello,

Do you mean Charley Weiss,,OMG!! dont do that to such a fine makers work!!! I would contact Charley and see if he could take it off for you instead.

Since your talking about a collectors quality peice, you should post this in the bernard levine forum and ask his opinion on the value of the dagger with the scrimshaw, and with the scrimshaw removed. It may not really fit your taste, but it should make a big difference in the value.Adn you could always sell it for big bucks and then buy a knife thats more your style.
