Greetings,
after reading a recent post i am considering removing the scales of my shbm (slotted) and cleaning under the blade. This would also be a good time to etch or otherwise mark my name under there. Does anyone have any experience doing this. I dont want to end up stripping the screw heads or otherwise causing damage. If i attempt it I will be using a gunsmith type screwdriver matched to the head of the screws. Also is it necessary to hold the opposing screw to prevent it from turning.
thanks
josh

May as well drill them out.... you'll never manage to get them back on the same again.... trust me

Screws have been locked with red Loctite

To remove the screws with out damage, heat the screws with the tip of a soldering iron.

Number each part for position, there are six parts, if you can not replace, then start over with new screws or go to hole types fasteners.

Better for the value of the knife to just leave it alone.

If you do decide to proceed would you mind taking some pics and posting them here?

If the slots are deep and not too shallow then it should be fairly easy. Use bits that fit snugly in the slot and a soldiering gun to loosen up the loktite.

I just mark the set of screws as 1, 2, and 3 and replace them in the same order. Also make note of Left and Right sides of the screw set.

Didn't I read here once about marking the position of each slot, by making a small mark in the micarta?

You might trying contacting the shop for advice.

The actual position of the screws are not really all that critical. I normall position the slots to face approximately the same position on one side. The positions of the screws will be determine by the final depth of the handles and tang. There is typically enough room in the female threads to take up for the slack once material is removed to get rid of the dimples.

If it were me, I would oil with "KROIL" that will creep under the handles.

And fuggetaboutit. Unless i had rust around the outside of the handle area.
