Ok so I recently bought a tops bob and my step son liked it so much I decided to get him one for his upcoming bday. Well the only one in stock was the display model..no biggie however when I got home I noticed the retail sticker stuck to the untreated portion of the knife (genius's really). Well after removing it and getting the glue off it's stuck with black stains on the steel. Anyway to remove this? Being a gift I'd like it not to have a ugly stain on it when I give it to him.

Maybe some barkeepers friend, or mothers mag polish. Not sure what the stain actually is. I bet the young fella hardly notices. That is a cool gift, good on you. Russ

It's basically residue from a sticker that discolored the steel...I used goo gone to get the sticky stuff off, but that didn't remove the discoloration

Metal polish.

Loaded strop is my go to, with green compound you can buy a stick of it at the hardware store for $3. My stick has lasted 10 yers, and I still have 1/3 left.

Rub some on a cloth, or scrap of leather, or paper towel, etc.

Baking soda, water and a wine cork. Circular motions. Should even out the finish over time. Do the whole blade of course.

I tried that with green an black compound on leather..it helped a lil bit...should be fine enough I guess....I'm a lil ocd I guess when things are new they look new lol it'll get beat on after he gets it anyway.

For removing stains and polishing, I usually use Flitz Polish. It works very well and is not overly expensive.

I have been a cutler for 40 years. I use Simichrome polish, and at times NeverDull wadding.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I've gotten the best I can for what I have at hand. It was allot darker before,

^That looks pretty good; I think your son will be thrilled to have that knife. Looks like the sticker's adhesive might've trapped some moisture or other corrosive stuff, and perhaps left a tiny bit of very shallow pitting in the steel; I think that's what I see remaining. That being said, even that won't really be an issue in the long run, especially if the knife gets used. 1095 will acquire some patina with use and time, and the tiny bit of staining or pitting left there will just blend right into the background. I wouldn't worry about it at all.
