Hey all,
I really don't care for the blade coating on my Ratmandu, love the knife though.
How would someone go about removing the scales, without damage, then reinstalling them?
Also what have you used to remove the coating?

I appreciate the info!

You can get the coating off with paint stripper. And no need to take the scales off, just remove the coating on the exposed parts of the tang, and the parts under the scales will still be protected by coating.

Yep! No need at all to remove those scales. One less worry about rust under the scales.

The stripper will not harm the scales in any way.

I just stripped a Busse AMS and a SwampRat HRLM. I used ferric chloride to etch the logos deeper and paint stripper(kleen strip) from Home Depot. It worked great. The black coating on the Busse literally fell off. The tanker gray on the HRLM was a mother to get off. I had to use a wire brush and strip it twice. Well worth it though. I think it's wise to leave the scales on. I used Obenauf's (best stuff, period) to bring a little life back into the scales, for the stripper dried the surface of them a bit, but absolutely no harm done. Good luck. It's easy.

Yes I use "Citristrip" when I am removing paint. As others have said leave the grips on and the pain underneith them ;)

Using paint stripper on Busses and other from that family is no problem - Micarta, G-10 or Res.-C , just do it...

Allways remember to use some sort of oil on the bare metal after finishing - WD-40 or something similar - and that dosnt harm them handles either.
