Removing the knife blade from your tool ?

Long time lurker, first time poster is curious if anyone's tried to do this.

Now, in case anyone's tempted to knife-knut knee-jerk into "Don't pander to the sheeple" mode, be advised that I EDC a Spyderco Police; definately not the most friendly looking blade out there.

I ask because I'm looking into getting a Gerber Diesel, to go with the Spydie Paramilitary I just ordered (both in black, of course:cool: ). Since I'd generally be carrying the para, there's no need for the blade on my tool, and I'd prefer to lose both the blade and saw so I could go completely "weapon"-less () if necessary, leaving the knife at home but keeping the multi-tool.

Each one is on a different half of the handle, so there wouldn't be too large of a gap in either side.

Should I just grind/saw through either blade at the base/"tang" ? Or is there a way to disassemble the tool ?

I'd appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.

Wow, that's a new one.
I never heard of someone wanting to de-mil their multi tool before. But, I do hear your reasons.

The blade pivots on a Diesel are held together with strange (ugly, IMO) torx screws. You'll need a couple of torx wrenches to disassemble it. They look to be about T8 maybe?
But you can't just remove the knife blades altogether. The gap would take the tension off the remaining tools, allowing them to flop in the breeze. Instead you will have to cut off the knife part, then put the base part back in where it came from. What a waste.

Better would be to re-contour the knives into some other maybe-useful shape. Perhaps a blunt pry bar or a scraper or an awl. Anything would be better than nothing.

Im sorry i just dont see the point. It is a multi tool "therfore a tool not a weapon" (no illegal activity there). It does not matter what you do with the blades. If you are in a place where they do not allow the blade on a multi tool it will not matter if you take it off, or grind it off (air travel, or any secure area "you will still lose it"). The multi tool still will not be accepeted.
Your reaseon again?????
Well since the multi tool itself is not a prob, and removing the blades still leaves the tool the same size... What is the point again???
And you are not giving up too much weight, and may need that (MULTI TOOL BLADE) when u leave the knive at home....Whats the point again???
Sorry i just dont get it.....The logic does not justify the means??

Does anybody own the Gerber Suspension yet? That looks like a nice Gerber to modify. I played with one in a knife shop and the blades are really really tight. The one-handed opening should have been called one-more-hand opening. Actually I couldn't even open it with one more hand.

Do you guys know where I can buy bronze bushings? I'm thinking of putting bronze bushings in the inner tools in my Wave and Surge.

Doesn't SOG make a multi-tool with easily removable blades/tools?
Yup...The PowerLock, and Deluxe Pocket PowerPlier models at-least...They even have a spacer that you can get from them for the empty space.

Since I usually carry a knife and a multitool, the blade on the multitool never gets used. I will often change out the blade in my EDC multitool for another implement or modify the blade into another implement (a reamer for example). If you are going to remove the blade, why not fill the space with something usefull.

Take a look around. Leatherman is offering a Fuse with the knife blade replaced by a file. I have both versions and they are neat.

I also have a Gerber Diesel, My opinion is the quality has either gone down hill or I have just gotten used to the higher quality of my SOG powerlock. That being said two of my favorite things about the diesel are the knife and the saw. In fact my only complaint is that it twists when its open and it is hard to open one handed. Also I had to send it in to be replaced because the blade lock broke off. I think the knife is extremely used for cutting things like tile, carpet or any crap work that I don't want to mess up my larger EDC. That is what I use the knife blade for on all my multis. So I would think twice before making any permanent mods like cutting the blade off... you might regret it. JMHO

That's not accurate in all cases. I have flown (within the last month) with a Leatherman Micra and an old PST II without the blades. I just handed them to TSA before going through the screening. (I didn't want them to think I was hiding anything.) Went through security at National in DC and Hartsfield in Atlanta. No problems.

Wenger has actually come out with a Clipper model that get's the TSA ok because they replaced the knife blade with a precision scredriver.

The TSA specifically allows screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches up to 7", so I cannot think that they would not allow a smaller multi-tool that had had the blade removed.
