Removing the speed assist, no detent?

Alright so i originally loved the speed assisted knives but im growing more towards manual knives. So i tried taking the speed safe out of all of my kershaws that had it and found that although there was a ball for the detent there was no detent for the ball to sit in. I understand the ball is for the blade to glide on instead of just rubbing the flat stainless on stainless contact. BUT......

I was wondering if kershaw could make future designs where the speed safe could come out and the knife would still remain closed with the detent when it sits in my pocket. I may be wrong but i dont think it would be too hard to machine it in the blade. Just something i thought of and thought it would be badass to have.

if this is something you guys would like, maybe reply to this and say that youd be up for that and maybe Thomas would take the hint ;)

Which Kershaws did you try to remove the speedsafe from without success? I know some of them work fine without speedsafe, like the Blur or the Cyclone, but others need the torsion bar to function, like the Leek. Kershaw definitely does make some knives that work without the speedsafe.

I'm the same way, in that I've been leaning towards manual knives for the past while, but am still interested in Kershaw's designs. I wonder if anyone's tried taking the torsion bar out of their Knockout yet...

the shallot, zt0300, zt0350, scallion,

I'm not a fan of assisted opening so I took the torsion spring out of my 0300. I had to drill a small dimple in the blade for the detent ball to sit in to keep it closed. I agree it would be nice if Kershaw already did this.

how hard was this to do, and do you have any pics? not trying to force you into uploading pics but i would love to see it.

Don't have any pics, but it was not hard to do. Just marked the blade with a sharpie where the detent ball should lie, center punched it and then used a sharp bit to make a small dimple.

Thank you for this thread! I'm not yet comfortable in doing such work, but I'm glad to know others have tried and succeeded. I won't use an AO, but I'll consider one if I can "manualize" it.

For the record, my ZT0350 has a detent hole from the factory. Works perfectly without the torsion bar like a manual flipper, but I prefer to keep it Speedsafe of course. I am not sure if they started adding the holes at some point - my serial number is early 9000's if you want to check yours.

I don't recommend drilling the blade to add a hole - you are going to damage your bit, drill and knife.
